What Is Titanium in Eyewear?
Titanium is a metallic element that’s become the gold standard in premium eyewear. In glasses, “titanium” refers to the temple arms, nose bridge, and drill-mount hardware. Pure titanium (Grade 1 or Grade 2) is the lightest option; beta-titanium is an alloy with added flexibility; memory titanium can flex far out of shape and return to its original position without damage.
Why Titanium Beats Other Frame Materials
Weight: Titanium is 45% lighter than steel. A full titanium rimless frame weighs as little as 5-8 grams — less than two nickels. Compared to stainless steel hardware (15-20g) or acetate (25-35g), the difference is dramatic.
Corrosion resistance: Titanium doesn’t rust or corrode, even with daily sweat exposure. Steel hardware corrodes at the drill-mount point, which is the number-one cause of rimless lens cracking. Titanium eliminates this failure mode entirely.
Strength: Titanium has roughly the same tensile strength as many steels but is far lighter. The strength-to-weight ratio is the highest of any practical eyewear material. This means titanium hinges and mounting hardware can be made thinner and lighter without sacrificing durability.

Beta-titanium adds aluminum and vanadium to pure titanium, increasing flexibility while maintaining corrosion resistance. Memory titanium (also called flexon titanium) can be bent 90 degrees and will spring back to its original shape — useful for temple arms that get sat on or bent. How to Identify True Titanium
Look for “Ti” or “Titanium” stamped on the inside of the temple arm. Many frames marketed as “metal” or “alloy” are actually cheap zinc or nickel alloy, which corrodes and weakens.
