The Short Answer

Modern rimless glasses — particularly titanium frames — are significantly more durable than their delicate appearance suggests. They’re not indestructible, but for everyday wear (including accidental drops, lens cleaning, and years of daily use), a well-made rimless frame will outlast many full-frame options.

What Makes Rimless Frames Vulnerable

The mounting screws. The small screws that attach the lens to the bridge and temples can loosen over time from vibration and thermal expansion/contraction. If a screw loosens and falls out, the lens can detach. The solution: check screws monthly and have them tightened at your optician every 6–12 months (free in most cases, takes 2 minutes).

Lens edge impact. Without a protective frame, the edge of the lens can crack if the glasses are dropped on a hard surface at the right angle. This is rare in normal use but worth knowing. A hard-shell case eliminates this risk when you’re not wearing the glasses.

What Makes Rimless Frames Remarkably Durable

Titanium construction. Titanium is stronger per unit weight than steel and highly resistant to bending, corrosion, and fatigue. A titanium rimless frame can be bent significantly and return to shape. Titanium temples and bridges show virtually no wear after years of daily use.

Fewer failure points. Full-frame glasses have hinges, screws, barrel joints, and frame stress points throughout the rim. Rimless frames have a simpler structure — fewer places for things to break.

No rim to crack or delaminate. Acetate full frames can warp in heat, develop stress cracks at hinge points, and delaminate over years. Rimless frames avoid all of these failure modes.

The Bottom Line

If you’re careful with your glasses (using the case, tightening screws when needed), rimless frames last 5–10+ years without issue. If you’re rough with glasses or work in environments with frequent lens impacts, a full-frame sports option is more appropriate for those contexts. Most professional and everyday environments are perfectly fine for rimless.
