Titanium is the defining material of quality rimless glasses. Every design decision in a rimless frame — the drill-mount construction, the minimal hardware, the emphasis on lightness — is enabled by titanium’s unique combination of properties. Understanding what makes titanium the right material for rimless eyewear is the first step to understanding why it has become the standard for the category.
What Makes Titanium Special
Weight: Titanium is approximately 45% lighter than stainless steel by volume. In a rimless frame — where the hardware is already minimised — this translates to frames weighing as little as 5–8 grams. For context, a standard acetate full-frame weighs 20–30 grams. The difference is significant over a full day of wear.
Strength: Titanium has a higher tensile strength than most eyewear-grade stainless steel. This means thinner hardware that still holds the lens securely. In a rimless context — where the entire structural load is carried through two or four tiny drill points — this strength is not a nice-to-have, it is a requirement.
Flexibility: Beta titanium — the alloy used in most quality rimless frames — has superelastic properties. It flexes significantly before permanently deforming, which means temples and bridges can be bent and adjusted without breaking or losing their shape. For a construction that depends on precise hardware positioning, this flexibility is essential for longevity.
Hypoallergenic: Titanium is completely nickel-free and biocompatible. Nickel allergies affect a significant proportion of the population and are a common cause of skin reactions to eyewear. Titanium eliminates this problem entirely.
Corrosion resistance: Titanium forms a stable oxide layer on its surface that prevents corrosion. Sweat, skincare products, and moisture — all of which attack cheaper metals — have virtually no effect on titanium. This is particularly important for nose pad areas and temple contact points.
Types of Titanium Used in Rimless Frames
Pure titanium (Grade 1–4): Soft enough to machine precisely, strong enough for frame applications. Used in many quality rimless frames for bridge and hinge components.
Beta titanium: An alloy of titanium with vanadium, molybdenum, or other metals. More flexible and stronger than pure titanium. Used in temples and spring hinge mechanisms. Most premium rimless frames use beta titanium for the temple arms.
Titanium SPX / Memory titanium: A specific beta titanium alloy with extreme superelastic properties. Frames made from memory titanium return to their original shape after significant bending. Found in the most flexible rimless frames — particularly useful in sports or active-use contexts.
What to Look for When Buying
Not all frames labelled “titanium” are pure titanium. Look for:
“100% titanium” or “pure titanium”: Means the frame body (excluding nose pads and screws) is titanium. This is the standard you want.
Spring hinges: Quality titanium rimless frames have spring-loaded hinges that flex outward. This protects the drill holes from stress when the temples are opened too wide.
CNC-drilled lenses: The drill holes in the lens should be machine-cut with chamfered (bevelled) edges. This distributes the load from the screw across a wider area of the lens, significantly reducing the risk of cracking.
Weight: A good titanium rimless frame should weigh between 5 and 12 grams. Anything heavier suggests the frame contains significant amounts of other metals.
