Progressive lenses — also called no-line bifocals or multifocals — are among the most technically demanding lens applications in optics. Combining near, intermediate, and distance vision correction in a single lens requires careful design, precise fitting, and the right frame. Rimless frames offer specific advantages and specific considerations for progressive wearers that are worth understanding before you buy.
How Progressives Work in Rimless Frames
A progressive lens has three optical zones: the distance zone at the top, the near zone at the bottom, and the intermediate corridor connecting them. The corridor runs vertically through the centre of the lens, and its width determines how much visual “sweet spot” is available at each distance.
In a rimless frame, the lens height (vertical dimension) directly determines how much corridor length is available. A deeper lens — 38–44mm in height — provides a longer, more comfortable progressive corridor with less distortion at the sides. A shallower lens — under 35mm — creates a compressed corridor that requires more precise head positioning and can feel uncomfortable for new progressive wearers.
Recommended Lens Heights for Rimless Progressives
Minimum viable height: 30mm — possible, but the corridor is very compressed. Only for experienced progressive wearers who are comfortable with minimal corridor depth.
Comfortable height: 34–38mm — the sweet spot for most progressive wearers. Enough corridor depth for comfortable transition between distances.
Optimal height: 38–44mm — provides the most comfortable progressive experience in a rimless frame. Particularly recommended for first-time progressive wearers transitioning from single-vision lenses.
Best Rimless Shapes for Progressives
Oval: The best shape for progressive rimless glasses. The oval’s depth-to-width ratio provides good corridor length while remaining aesthetically refined. The Cartier-style oval (50–55mm wide × 38–42mm tall) is the classic progressive-compatible rimless shape.
Proportionate rectangle: A rectangle where the height is at least 36mm works well for progressives. Avoid very shallow rectangles (under 34mm height) for progressive lenses.
Round: Excellent for progressives — the generous height of a round lens (diameter and height are equal) provides plenty of corridor space.
Avoid: Very shallow cat eye, very shallow rectangle, or any lens with a height under 30mm.
Fitting Considerations
Progressive lenses must be fitted to a specific pupil height — the vertical distance from the bottom of the lens to the wearer’s pupil centre. This measurement is critical: if the pupil height is wrong, the distance zone will not align with your line of sight when looking straight ahead.
